Mac OS X 10.4 ("Tiger"), as with previous major operating system
upgrades from Apple, will likely bring with it some unexpected
problems and transition issues.
This is the usual cautionary statement: please wait to deploy Mac
OS X 10.4 on your user's workstations and your production servers
until after sufficient time has passed for these issues to be
identified and solutions found.
For instance, some products distributed by the campus - through the
WSS Software website <http://software.berkeley.edu>, the C_at_B 2005 CD
<http://cab.berkeley.edu>, and otherwise - may be incompatible, at
least to some degree, with Mac OS X 10.4.
For instance, we're anticipating that both Norton AntiVirus and
Norton Personal Firewall - used to meet the campus Minimum Security
Standards for Networked Devices on some Macintoshes running Mac OS X
- will require updates for Tiger compatibility.
In addition, it is certain that some third-party productivity
applications, utilities, and system enhancements will also require
updates or upgrades for Tiger compatibility.
Finally, there may be unexpected bugs in the OS itself. In October
2003, for instance, the rollout of Mac OS X 10.3 ("Panther") was
accompanied by Firewire- and FileVault-related issues that caused
serious problems for some users. Here's hoping the transition to
Tiger goes more smoothly ...

P.S. Of course, we encourage you to install Mac OS X 10.4 in testing
environments as early as possible, so that you can test critical
software used on your departmental machines.
