Glenn Robertson asks:

application? If so, where is it?

Yes: select "Terminal Help" from Terminal's "Help" menu.

At least under Mac OS X 10.3 ("Panther"), there are 11 distinct help
topics that describe some of the 'how-tos' of the Terminal application
that Apple bundles with OS X.

For many more pearls of wisdom about various uses of and configuration
options in Terminal, try searching for your topics of interest, and
including the word "terminal" in your search keywords, on:

  http://www.macosxhints.com/

Books that describe how to take advantage of non-obvious capabilities
in Apple (and sometimes third-party) applications and operating system
features are also good sources of help. Even for those of us who use
OS X on a daily basis, there are often revelatory tips and hints in
books such as this one:

David Pogue
Mac OS X: The Missing Manual

Finally, if Apple's provided Terminal application doesn't do everything
you wish it to do, or if you're looking for a different human interface
design - say, partly transparent terminal windows - there are a number of
alternatives. These range from X Windows-based client applications to
Terminal replacements such as iTerm <http://iterm.sourceforge.net/>.
