Quick responses! Since then Ionut has come back to me to let me know
that it turns out the PC archival software swapped "/" into ":". Go
figure.
But for everyone else, Christopher Payne and Dan Cheng (both at LBL)
had useful ideas for this task...
(1) If the Mac user still has the Mac version of the files, check out
the shareware application "A Better Finder Rename." It ought to be
able to help rename the files as a batch process to something
Windows-safe. [CP]
(2) Maybe writing a shell script (if the user has access to OSX and
the Terminal app) to make the
batch changes. I wrote one long ago to batch change file extensions
in a given directory to a different one (.gif to .jpg, for example).
