Hi All - Yes, there are those of us who DO support Macs only. I'm
one. And why?
Because I support approximately 25 users across two institutions,
with multiple policies, different licensing guidelines and prices,
and inventory controls. In addition, nearly all these users
(geologists) have portables with all the issues of bike accidents and
dings in the field. These users are overall very savvy, with heavy
graphic data presentation needs; most have approximately 20
applications for work installed on their systems (then there are
those grad students with iTunes, etc...).
In addition, I manage our budget of approximately $1.6 million (on
campus), deal with several contracts, work as liaison on an
international research project, organize workshops, and deal with
whatever crisis raises its ugly head. Umm...forgot to mention the
research website for the Center as well--design, content generation,
editing, whatever (yes, I can WRITE too, oh my!).
Clearly, I don't have time to waste on constantly fixing infected
systems, helping someone deal with yet another printer problem,
coping with printer server issues, etc. Yet I can usually get people
back to work within 24 hours or less, which, if someone is about to
leave for Iceland, is highly valued around here.
The rule of thumb here is, if you want a Windows machine, go for it,
but I don't spec it out or support it. So far nearly all those who
started with Windows converted to Mac because the support was so much
more responsive (the trick being there is a lot less need in the
first place!).
Yup, the mac-only support person is still here...
