(1) Thought folks might enjoy reading this Wall Street Journal
columnist's recommendation of platform for the lowering of costs of
security:

(2) Today's SF Chronicle had an extensive article on the impact on
Microsoft's business caused by recent security attacks, in-house
budget changes to focus attention on patching security flaws, and
lost corporate contracts:
"At Microsoft, security flaws emerge as business shortcomings"

(I'd make snide remarks, but I don't have any wood to knock on close
at hand, and I don't want the wrath of the gods to fall upon us
provincial mac users. All I can say is that I feel pretty sorry for
the Windows support guy downstairs--his life has been pretty
miserable lately.)
(3) In addition, I wanted to make sure that folks knew about the
white blotch problem on the displays of the new Aluminum 15" G4
powerbook. Newspaper article recently in the San Jose Mercury Times:
http://www.bayarea.com/mld/siliconvalley/7148746.htm And a mention
in ComputerWorld:
http://www.computerworld.com/softwaretopics/os/macos/story/0,10801,86802,00.html
I have one user with a new system which has these white
blotches--doesn't make the display unusable, but it's irritating
(irritates me more than him). His display spots were obvious right
away, but apparently they can appear up to a month later.
Thought other support people might want to keep an eye on this, since
apparently Apple still is investigating the situation and hasn't
really got a good fix on it yet.
Apple recommends that users seeing this problem (the Aluminums
started coming out early October 2003) contact AppleCare (on campus,
start with Campus Computer Repair http://www-whsg.berkeley.edu/).
Apple definitely will take care of the problem once they figure it
out.
(Personally I recommend reporting the problem now, but if you can
live with the computer, I'd wait until they've come out with a real
fix, because those that have been sent back for display replacement
have been coming back with new white blotches. Most of us can't
manage without our systems for multiple blocks of 4-5 days.)
