Just to add to the confusion... we had an OS X's disk that
appeared totally dead... after much googling, and many indications of
"it's hopeless!" for the errors we saw, we scrounged up a grand total
of two anecdotes (one in English, one in French) of Norton being able
to solve this problem.

We bought Norton. It fixed the disk. (Er, well, to be more
accurate, fscking *after* Norton finally fixed the disk.)

I'm not discounting other users' bad experiences, but thought
I should add this data point.
