Windows users can't use password type basic. You have to use
password server. Which requires setting up an open directory server
if you haven't already done that.

I suppose things could have changed but when we set up our server
last fall (OS 10.2.4, I believe) this was the requirement. And the
intial setup for OS X server was rather confusing since the obvious
choice for us (users authenticated locally, I think) is incompatible
with password server.
