   You might also be sure to trash any prefs files (.plist files and
the like) associated with the Mail app, just in case they might be
the cause of Mail's inability to open.

   Also, there's a utility -- Pacifier <http://www.charlessoft.com/>
that allows you to open up Apple installer package files, such as
those on the Mac OS X installation CDs, and just extract the files
you need.
