For Java developers and enthusiasts who are running Mac OS X, Apple
has just released its first official "Developer Preview" of Java 2
Standard Edition (J2SE) 1.4.1 for Mac OS X 10.2. Details appear
below.

(The usual caveats apply: as a Developer Preview, this may not be
feature complete and may have more bugs than most final releases.
Also, if you don't regularly work with Java, there is little benefit
at this time to downloading and installing this preview release.)

J2SE 1.4 is the latest major release of the runtime environment
that allows your computer to run programs written in the Java
programming language, such as Java-based applets, servlets, and
standalone applications. A summary of new features and other changes
introduced in J2SE 1.4 can be found at
<http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/releases/j2se1.4/>.

All recent versions of Mac OS X have come pre-installed with the
previous major release, 1.3.1, of the the Java runtime environment.
However, so far, Mac OS X has lagged the Windows, Linux, and Solaris
operating systems in obtaining J2SE 1.4, so last Friday's
announcement represents a significant step forward towards parity.

P.S. The "Classic" Mac OS, versions 8.x and 9.x, is limited to
running a much older version, 1.1.8, of the Java runtime environment,
which is -- somewhat confusingly -- packaged by Apple, along with
some Macintosh-specific Java utilities, as "Macintosh Runtime for
Java" (MRJ) version 2.2.5
<http://developer.apple.com/java/download.html>.

You can add a few significant features of newer Java releases to
MRJ 2.2.5, such as the Collections framework for dealing with
list-type data, and the Swing framework for building GUI
applications, by downloading the .jar files associated with those
frameworks from <http://java.sun.com/products/javabeans/infobus/> and
<http://java.sun.com/products/jfc/download.archive.html>,
respectively. Applications for the Classic Mac OS requiring these
features also usually come bundled with the relevant .jar files.

Subject: Java 1.4.1 Developer Preview: Available NOW! To: java-dev@lists.apple.com From: Allen Denison <allen@apple.com> Date: Fri, 25 Oct 2002 07:53:42 -0700

All:

The wait is over! Apple is excited to announce our first official Developer Preview of Java 1.4.1 for Mac OS X version 10.2!

The preview includes almost all of the 1.4.1 VM and UI implementation--much more complete than the version supplied at WWDC. It's now posted on ADC for download, and is accessible to all ADC members, Online->Premier. The seed is named "J2SE 1.4.1 Developer Preview 2" and has been posted to the "Download Software" section of the ADC web site <https://connect.apple.com>. If you're not an ADC member, now is a good time to join.

Sometime after you download the Developer Preview, you will be getting an e-mail to confirm whether you want to be added to a new mailing list we've set up to discuss. We are setting up this list as a place to discuss the Developer Preview with Apple and others who are using it. The terms and conditions of the download will allow you to discuss the Developer Preview on this list and this list only. Do not discuss this Developer Preview in any other forum! If your ADC account is set up to not get e-mail notices from Apple, you will not get this message and will not be able to join the list.

We're not yet ready to commit to a final release date for 1.4.1. In fact, we will be considering your feedback on its quality when making that decision. You are encouraged to try this out, submit bugs and let us know what you like and don't like. Each Developer Preview, including the first, will include release notes of what is and isn't working. We encourage you to read that document carefully before using the release or submitting bugs.

Thanks for being so patient on this. The extra time and effort put into this project was all about making our Java much more in-sync with Sun's, such that we can provide future releases in a more timely manner.

We hope you take the time to download and try this release out. This will be our only message to this list regarding the early access for a while. Further discussion on the Developer Preview will take place on the new dedicated private mailing-list.
