Hi Letitia:
A few things for him to try:
1) Does it still happen if he calls the Lucent modems (647-5117)
instead of the Faculty modems?
2) Does it still happen if he selects the "v.34 only" file for his
modem in the Modem control panel? (This will force the modem to
operate at 33.6 rather than 56K, but it should be a bit more
reliable.)
3) Has he tried plugging the computer into a different phone jack?
4) Has he tried using a different phone cable between the computer
and the wall?
There are also a bunch of troubleshooting tips for this sort of thing
on the Connecting@Berkeley website. See
