Gee, I kind of hate to say this, but I also have a Mac, in my case an old
7500/100 with a G3 card running OS 9.0.0. I was without @home service
Saturday and part of Sunday (I guess that was the 1st and 2nd). On Monday
the 3rd I noticed all the lights on the cable modem were lit up. I
doubleclicked the IE Explorer browser ICON. I immediately got a default
attbi home page with instructions. I downloaded the CONFIGURATOR (notice
that I'm now connected through my old @home settings) for the Mac. I ran it.
It did what it did (I believe it removed the gateway and IP address from the
TCP/IP settings control panel and set it up for DHCP). I manually reset my
email connections in Outlook Express according to their directions, and now
retrieve my email at my new attbi address.

And I've been connected ever since. This was SO easy and almost completely
automatic. So I feel your pain (and I've got an old Mac I'll sell you!)

More experience to add to the pool:
After receiving the ATTBI phone call last Tuesday and rebooting, my cable
modem still had only 2 of the 3 green lights lit, and the 4th (test) was
yellow. I spent 45 minutes (including 5 reboots) on the phone with their
help desk. First hehad me reset the modem. Since it had no on/off switch I
unplugged it and plugged it in. The first three green lights then went on
and the yellow went off. Meanwhile, he had me change the TCP/IP settings
according to the instructions on their newuser website, i.e., DISABLE DNS
and REMOVE the dns server search numbers, REMOVE the gateway, obtain ip
address automatically. Still didn't work. He speculated that my wireless
home network and my use of MS Internet Connection Sharing were causing the
problem. He had me release and renew IP addresses and he consulted with
several other people in the background. Since we had so much time to kill
waiting for reboots, I mentioned this email chain and asked why so many
people seemed to be having problems. After about 2 minutes of silence (I
seriously thought he had gone on a break), he said "Well, we're finding
that Windows 98 in particular is hanging on to IP addresses and not
releasing them." I didn't pursue it. Finally, he said I must have a bad
modem and someone would need to come to my house -- they would call me to
schedule an appointment. That was 5 days ago and no one has called yet.

While waiting for the phone call, I tried ruling out other causes. I found
out that my next door neighbor, another @home user, had not been able to
connect yet either. Then I spoke with a former co-worker (with a home
network and ICS) who HAD gotten it to work, and compared TCP/IP settings
with him. His settings are NOTHING like the ATTBI instructions posted on
their website. He is still using the old @home gateway number, and the old
@home dns numbers. I changed my settings to match his, and voila, I am now
connected. I am sure that this is NOT the way ATTBI wants us to connect,
but "Any port in a storm."

Incidentally, their website FAQ
http://help.broadband.att.com/listfaqs.jsp?category_id=5&category.has a lot
of pages with date/time stamps from late last week. Since anyone on their
help desk is going to start by walking you thru these instructions, it
might save troubleshooting time if you can tell them "I've already tried
that."

Last night I spent 30 minutes trying to help my neighbor, but he has a
Mac. I am not on the distribution list here for Mac users, but I suspect a
parallel email chain is going on there. If anyone out there has seen any
Mac configuration discussions, I would appreciate it if they would forward
it to me so I can pass it on to my neighbor.
