I'm seeing a similar problem with UCBackup, using the TSM Backup
4.2.1 client (the latest available) under Mac OS 10.1.

The client starts up and runs normally for a while -- and completes
normally if the backup is small -- but is likely to lose its network
connection during a large backup. When I look at the Console, TSM and
other network apps are producing repeated DNS query failures --
indicating that the G4 has apparently lost its network connection.

I've never seen this happen with any network app except TSM. For
example, I did a 180 MB download from Apple with no problems. Web
browsers, email, ftp all seem to work fine.

In the booklet "Setting Up Your Power Mac G4", page 60, under
"Maximizing Ethernet Performance", it says:

"Your computer works best when the Ethernet port to which it is
attached is set to autonegotiate. Work with your network
administrator to verify this setting."

It goes on to talk about how the Mac will default to half-duplex if
it is unable to autonegotiate with the Ethernet hub, and how this
will cause problems if the switch is actually configured for full
duplex.

Does anyone know if this is in fact an issue with campus local Ethernets?

I recall that there was a discussion on this list about a year ago
about G4 Ethernet problems. This seems to be a similar problem -- the
only "solution" is to reboot the computer. However, like I said, it
only seems to be an issue when running the TSM client to connect to
UCBackup.
