Updated information regarding the compatibility of the
Connecting@Berkeley 2002 CD with recently released operating systems,
including Windows XP Professional and Home editions, Mac OS X 10.1,
and Mac OS 9.2.1, is available from the Connecting@Berkeley Web site
<http://cab.berkeley.edu/>.

An announcement posted to that site on 2001-10-31 notes that:

>A new "Connecting@Berkeley 2002 CD Updates" document will be
>distributed with all new C@B CDs sold on campus. This document

Consistent with what you've noted above, the "Updates" document
mentions that:

>The configuration programs and "Additional software" on
>the Connecting@Berkeley 2002 CD are compatible with Windows
>XP Professional and Home editions, with the exception
>of the Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition (NAVCE) 7.51 package.

A PDF version of this Updates document can be downloaded from the
link on the C@B Web site's home page, or directly from:

   http://cab.berkeley.edu/updates/cab-updates-2001-10-22.pdf

For the convenience of campus support providers whose customers are
using the Connecting@Berkeley 2002 CD under Windows or the Mac OS,
the entire text of this document is appended below.

Connecting@Berkeley 2002 CD Updates

Please read this before using the Connecting@Berkeley 2002 CD! This document includes information on:

* Compatibility of the CD with Windows XP, Mac OS 9.2.1, and Mac OS X 10.1 * Advice on avoiding problems when using the CD

For a complete, current list of software updates and known issues affecting the Connecting@Berkeley 2002 CD, see: http://cab.berkeley.edu/updates/

If you need help using or troubleshooting the Connecting@Berkeley 2002 CD, you can find a list of campus resources on the back of the booklet that comes with the CD.

Windows =======

Compatibility: Windows XP ------------------------- The configuration programs and "Additional software" on the Connecting@Berkeley 2002 CD are compatible with Windows XP Professional and Home editions, with the exception of the Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition (NAVCE) 7.51 package. A compatible release of NAVCE (version 7.6 or greater) is available for download at: http://windows.berkeley.edu/software/anti-virus/navce/navce.html

If you are using Windows XP and have already installed version 7.51 of NAVCE from the CD, we recommend that you uninstall your current NAVCE and download and install the newer version noted above.

Important Advice: Uninstall older anti-virus programs before installing Norton AntiVirus ------------------------------------------------------------ Before you install Norton AntiVirus from the Connecting@Berkeley CD, you should uninstall any other antivirus products (such as NAI's VirusScan or Dr. Solomon's Anti- Virus Toolkit). Failure to do so may result in your computer freezing or crashing.

See the instructions that came with your previous antivirus program or visit its vendor's Web site for information on how to remove this software.

Advice: How to install "Additional Software" -------------------------------------------- The "Additional software" installers on the C@B CD were created by the vendors of these software packages, rather than by UC Berkeley.

We recommended that you install each program individually, one at a time, and make sure that it is working properly before going on to install additional programs. If you should need to troubleshoot problems following installation, this will greatly simplify your task.

If you choose to install multiple programs, under certain circumstances, the dialog for starting a new installer may be presented before the previous installation has completely finished. Because of this possibility, it is important that in every case, before you click to start a new installer, you try to verify that the previous installer has completed successfully. Additionally, it is important that you have dealt with any problems you may have encountered during an installation before starting a new installation. You can skip any individual installer or cancel the entire process at any time when presented with the dialog describing the next installer program to be started.

Macintosh =========

Compatibility: Mac OS 9.2.1 and Mac OS X 10.1 --------------------------------------------- The Connecting@Berkeley 2002 CD is compatible with Mac OS 9.2.1.

The Mac OS X-specific instructions and application programs provided on the CD are also compatible with Mac OS X 10.1. (There is a solely cosmetic issue, however: under Mac OS X 10.1, the screen layouts for setting up your Internet connections may differ slightly from the pictures in the Mac OS X instructions on the CD.)

Advice: Avoiding "Type 3" crashes when running C@B installers ------------------------------------------------------------- Under some rare circumstances, several of the C@B 2002 installer programs may quit shortly after being launched with a "The application has unexpectedly quit because an error of Type 3 occurred" error. This error seems to be limited to certain Macintoshes running Mac OS 9.0.4.

If you encounter this problem, download and install a newer version of Apple's CarbonLib file to update the very old version installed on your Macintosh. From any Macintosh connected to the Internet, you can download CarbonLib 1.4 from: http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n120047

Advice: Avoiding "hangs" when running the standalone Norton AntiVirus installer ---------------------------------------------------- If you perform a standard installation of the software on the CD, you will also be given the opportunity to install the Norton AntiVirus program. This installation works correctly.

If, however, you browse the contents of the CD, open the "Application Installers" folder, and manually run the Norton AntiVirus installer inside that folder, under some circumstances your Macintosh may appear to hang if you click the "Restart" button after the installation is finished.

To avoid this problem, click the "Quit" button--not the "Restart" button--when the installation is finished. For more details, see: http://cab.berkeley.edu/updates/macintosh-updates-2002.html
