I decided to try to switch to OS X for my daily work life, but I ran
into a major stumbling block: I couldn't get BrioQuery to connect to
our Oracle database. It seemed that Brio wasn't connecting to
Oracle's SQL*NET under OS X. In fact, none of Oracle's tools worked
(SQL*DBA, SQL Loader, etc.), since they weren't picking up SQL*NET.

I did work out a solution, which I'll describe in detail in case
others have more information or other ideas about this problem.

SQL*NET requires an alias called Oracle Libraries in the OS 9 System
Folder/Extensions folder. This alias points to the Libraries file in
the folder where the SQL*NET installation resides. It seems that
when OS X brings up OS 9.2 it does "something" to the Oracle
Libraries alias that makes it not recognizable by BrioQuery. However,
rebooting under 9.2 works just fine -- it's when 9.2 boots under X
that the problem occurs. If I keep a copy of the original alias I
can "fix" the problem by copying the copy of the alias back into the
Extensions folder.

I looked at attributes of the Oracle Libraries alias before and after
rebooting OS 9.2. There was no change in the Type or Creator codes,
and no change in the file attributes from the UNIX perspective (%ls
-l Oracle\ Libraries). One can double-click on the alias in either
case to connect to the real Libraries folder, showing that it
successfully performs like an alias from a client perspective. I
don't know what other attributes it's possible to look at.

I did think of a simple solution, however: Making a copy of the
Oracle SQL*NET library folder itself in the Extensions folder and
renaming it Oracle Library solved the connection problems.

My solution doesn't solve the basic question of what's going on with
the alias. If anyone has any ideas about this, I'd be very
interested.

And, I'd also be interested if my problem is unique -- I wasn't able
to find any similar problem reports on the Web.
