Funny. (Er, make that "Funny" in quotes.)
I had what sounds like exactly the same problems with an HP
4550N, trying to connect to a G4 via usb. The solution we used
probably won't be helpful to you -- we had a spare LocalTalk/Ethernet
adapter, and used a little hub to make the printer available via
AppleTalk. (Now the printer lives on its own network line and is
doing fine.)
Also, just today, I gave phone support to somebody having no
end of difficulties with a TiBook and a 1200-series HP LaserJet,
connected via USB. The user is finally printing; however, some jobs
queue but don't print, and need to be purged and re-sent.
These examples, combined with the following USB issues on the
HP site...

http://www.hp.com/cposupport/printers/support_doc/bpm01351.html
http://www.hp.com/cposupport/printers/support_doc/bpm01234.html
...make me wonder if HP is really ready for prime time with their USB
connectivity for MacOS.
