This is to formally announce to MAGNet what has previously been
announced in other fora: Symantec Corporation's Norton AntiVirus has
been selected as the UC Berkeley campus's site licensed desktop
anti-virus software.
This license is currently in effect and extends through the end of
June 2003. For further details, please see Bob Callaway's recent
article in Berkeley Computing and Communications at:
http://istpub.berkeley.edu:4201/bcc/Fall2001/svcs.newantivirus.html
As one consequence of this change in anti-virus software vendors,
Norton AntiVirus for the Macintosh (NAV) will be replacing Virex as
the campus's site licensed desktop anti-virus product for the Mac OS.
Our license for Virex, as well as for Network Associates, Inc.'s
VirusScan product line for Windows, expires three months from now, on
December 2, 2001. As Bob notes in his article, above, the timing of
these two contracts gives campus departments "an overlap period in
which to migrate to the new products."
For campus departments who will be making the transition from Virex
to Norton AntiVirus, please note that the campus's Norton AntiVirus
installer for the Macintosh will automatically deactivate Virex prior
to installing NAV. This installer -- which runs under Mac OS 8.1
through the latest Mac OS 9.x releases -- can be downloaded from the
Berkeley Macintosh Support Web site:
http://mac.berkeley.edu/anti-virus/nav.html
Also of note is that an early Mac OS X "native" version of Norton
AntiVirus is available. A link for downloading the native installer
will soon appear on the above page.
When running under Mac OS X, you can run the Norton AntiVirus
application to manually scan for and remove viruses, worms, and
trojans. However, the current release of this product for Mac OS X
does not yet include a component which provides continual protection
against such 'malware.' We expect this capability to be added to a
future version of NAV for Mac OS X.
We're very interested in your early feedback -- both positive and
negative -- regarding Norton AntiVirus for the Macintosh. You are
invited to send your comments directly to the MAGNet list or, if you
prefer, privately to us at <macfeedback@banter.berkeley.edu>.
We'll also be posting additional information about Norton
AntiVirus, including comments on our early experiences with Symantec
as the campus's anti-virus software vendor, over the coming weeks to
the Berkeley Macintosh Support Web site and to the MAGNet list. If
you have any suggestions for topics you'd like to see covered, please
feel free to write us at our feedback address above.
