Hi Beth,
Thanks for sending this problem report to MAGNet! Ian Crew and I
just looked at the first of the two problems you reported:

We also saw what we believe to be this error message:
The software to be installed requires System 10.0.0 or
newer, which is not on this computer.
when running the September 2001 "NAV Definitions Update" installer,
which we downloaded by clicking the first -- that is, the topmost and
hence most obvious -- link on Symantec's Norton AntiVirus for
Macintosh download page:
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/download/pages/US-NMC.html
Unfortunately, that update installer is specific to Mac OS X. One
would need to scroll down further on this page to find an update
installer intended for Mac OS 8.1-9.x.
It would be terrific if you could verify for us whether this might
be the cause of the problem that you encountered.
In any event, we'll suggest to Symantec that they reverse the order
in which these updates are presented and/or otherwise more clearly
distinguish the OS X updates from the updates intended for the
"Classic" Mac OS.
In addition, we'll rework the Norton AntiVirus home page on the
Berkeley Macintosh Support Web site so that campus Norton AntiVirus
users are no longer routinely directed to what appears to be a
confusing Symantec download page.
Generally, we'd strongly prefer that users of this product use
Symantec's Live Update, rather than manually downloading update
installers.

We'll work with you directly with you to isolate this LiveUpdate
issue, which we currently believe will occur only under a very
limited set of circumstances. (When we come up with a solution,
we'll post it to MAGNet.)
