I just went to mac.berkeley.edu to download the new Norton Anti-Virus
Program and the latest definitions to first test on my computer and
then to potentially install and support it on other computers in our
department. The downloads and installation of the program went fine,
but when I tried to install the NAV Definitions Update, I got an
error saying that it needed OS 10 or better to work and I have OS
9.2.1. I then tried LiveUpdate as way to circumvent the OS 10 and it
asked me for the Norton System Works CD before it would continue
(which fortunately I had) and though it did eventually update to the
September update (there were a few error messages which I apologize
I didn't write down, but it sounded like it wouldn't update me, but
it actually did), I am a little concerned because most of our users
don't have OS 10 and can't use OS 10 because of old computers and
also most of them don't have Norton System Works. Will it be
required that whenever I install a Norton Definitions update for the
first time on their computers, I'll need to also have the Norton
System Works CD?
The whole process seemed less efficient and more trouble than Virex
was. I didn't know who to email about this, but the web page doesn't
indicate that these issues will crop up and it took me by surprise
and I'm a tech support person. It's not as automated and I can
envision others downloading the software to get concerned or panicky
about the messages you get when installing the definitions. Is there
a way to streamline the process?
Any info is appreciated.
