The campus installer for Eudora 5.1r for the Macintosh installs
plug-in files which improve the display of 'white pages' entries for
campus employees and students in Eudora's "Directory Services" window.

This new Eudora installer is distributed via the soon-to-be
available Connecting@Berkeley 2002 CD and can also be downloaded
separately from:

   http://mac.berkeley.edu/internetsoftware/eudora/index.html

Among its many actions, the new Eudora installer places the
following campus-specific plug-in files in the "Eudora Stuff" folder
within the Eudora application folder:

   UCB - LDAP/finger hosts
   UCB - LDAP Attrib Labels

The "UCB - LDAP/finger hosts" file, which has also been included
with past campus Eudora distributions, has recently been updated.
This file has for some time set the default finger host to
"finger.berkeley.edu". As included with the latest Eudora
distribution, this file also sets the default Ph/LDAP server to the
following LDAP URL:

<ldap://caldir.berkeley.edu/dc=berkeley,dc=edu?displayname,title,mail,ucbadrdept1name,street,postalcode,telephonenumber,facsimiletelephonenumber,labeleduri,ucbadrdept2name,ucbadrstreet2,ucbadrpostalcode2,ucbadrphone2,mobile,pager>

The "UCB - LDAP Attrib Labels" file is new with the Eudora 5.1r
installer. It specifies that custom attribute labels are to be
displayed in Eudora's Directory Services window, and then defines a
mapping between a set of custom labels and the names of the
attributes returned from a search of the CalNet Directory Service, as
defined in the LDAP URL above.

In combination, these two plug-in files generate listings in the
Directory Services window that look something like the following:

------------------------------------------------------------
               Name: JOHNSON, Robert C.
              Title: Manager, COIS Information Technology
             E-mail: robj@uclink.berkeley.edu
                 --
Department: VC B&F-Computing Op & Info Systems
            Address: 2105 Bancroft
      ZIP/Mail Code: 94720-1516

                 --
       Department 2:
            Address:
      ZIP/Mail Code:

This display format represents an improvement in usability when
compared with the 'raw' information returned from a search of the
directory service without these plug-ins, as in the following example:

------------------------------------------------------------
objectclass: top | person | organizationalperson | inetorgperson |

If you or others would like these two plug-in files to be made
available separately from the full Eudora 5.1r distribution, please
let us know. To date, we've only tested these with Eudora 5.1r, but
it is possible that they may work with some earlier versions of
Eudora.

P.S. We've uncovered one relatively minor bug when using the new
campus plug-in files:

When you select an entry in the Directory Services window and choose
"Make Address Book Entry..." from Eudora's "Special" menu, incorrect
data is entered in several of the address book fields.

This bug appeared to be introduced when we changed the searchbase
portion of the LDAP URL from "o=berkeley.edu" to
"dc=berkeley,dc=edu", reflecting a corresponding change in the CalNet
Directory Service in early July 2001. (The old searchbase still
works via an LDAP 'referral,' but is deprecated.) Since it is
possible that the extra comma we added to the LDAP URL tripped up
Eudora, we'll report this to QUALCOMM ...
