The next WorldWide Federation of Micronet will be held on April 26, 2001,
10am-12pm. The location is the Ross & Irma "Mackity-Mack" McCollum Room
(775 A-B Tan Hall). Tan Hall is easy to find, as it is the only building
on campus that is not under construction, although it is connected to
several that are. It has recently been designated a Historic Landmark,
even though it is only 6 years old, owing to the fact that it has made an
Outstanding Contribution to Campus Aesthetics by NOT being encased in
scaffolding.

But enough edificial pontification. The point of this announcement is
that I am helping John coordinate the meeting, the topic of which is
"Alternative Unix." Previously, this would have been labeled "Unix on
Intel," but there are some additional topics that fall into the the more
broad category of Alternative Unix:

- Unix (open-source and commercial) on intel
- Unix (open-source and commercial) on Macintosh/PowerPC
- Open-source Unix on traditionally commercial-Unix platforms (e.g.
  Linux/sparc & alpha, *BSD/sparc & alpha & ..., etc.)

I am going to talk about a few topics, but I need help or this thing ain't
gonna work. I am especially interested in finding "enterprise users" of
alternative Unix. For example, does your department provide Mac or
Windows file & print services on an Alternative Unix plaform? (IIRC
Housing & Dining was using Linux and samba, is this still true?) Are you
using these platforms for anything that is mission-critical, production,
or instructional in nature.

I plan to talk *briefly* about:

- Open source software and the campus network
- "Do something fun with that old SparcStation!"
- License issues (GPL vs. BSD), if sufficient time & interest

I'd like some others to talk about:

- Linux in general -- what's new/neat (I haven't been dealing with linux
since I left Chemistry 2 years ago...)
- enterprise users (see above)
- Darwin on Mac/PowerPC (we can also talk about MacOS X, but I think that
will get ample coverage in future meetings/demos under the auspices
of MagNet and our Apple reps. However, I'd be interested to see
if anyone is running Darwin--I can't cuz the Mac I have is too
  old--NUBus and all that.)

What topics do YOU want to hear about??? Let me know ASAP. You get
brownie points if you can also nominate a presenter.

What topics to YOU ALREADY know about that you would like to share with
us??

Those who are selected to present will be awarded a limited-edition copy
of the Spring 2001 Berkeley Computing and Communications Newsletter,
autographed by all of the Current and Past Micronet Coordinators that are
still on campus and happen to be in their offices when I stop by with the
BC&Cs to be autographed.

Michael Sinatra
University Distinguished Micronet Coordinator (Emeritus)
