    Eve,

    You might try running a process listing utility to get a list of
    running processes on this machine. "Faceless Background Applications"
    and other processes spawned by applications or extensions will
    sometimes not quit cleanly via AppleEvents (sent during the "Restart"
    command). I would try using one of the utilities below to list and
    experiment with manually quitting the "invisible" processes. Once
    you've identified the culprit, you may be able to reconfigure or
    upgrade it in order to eliminate the hangs.

    Here are a couple of utilities that I've used in the past:

    Peek-a-Boo (shareware):
