John,
I don't believe there's a general problem with the SHIPS modems, since
we haven't seen a rash of trouble reports similar to yours, and the
modem logs show many users maintaining SHIPS connections for several
hours at a time.
That suggests that the problem is at your end: your modem or phone
line. Aron Roberts has already suggested a couple of URLs with
with some excellent troubleshooting tips. The Apple Tech Info Library
article mentions interoperability between modems as a potential
problem. I haven't heard of any such problems with the Zoom modems and
our servers, but if you think this might be causing your dropped
sessions you might try calling our Lucent Test modem service at
510-647-5117.
The Lucent server is from a different manufacturer than the SHIPS
servers (which are from Cisco Systems), so calling that pool may give
you some clues.
