If you've purchased an older version of "F-Secure SSH" (aka
"F-Secure SSH Terminal and Tunnel") client software for the Macintosh
from IST Software Distribution, you can obtain no-cost upgrades to
newer versions of this software.
Specifically, if you have purchased versions 1.0, 1.0a, or 1.0.1 of
this product, you can now obtain free upgrades to versions 1.0.2
and/or 2.0. (See the very end of this message for instructions on
obtaining upgrades.)
If you connect via SSH to Socrates or to certain other campus hosts
which have upgraded to newer SSH server software, you might need to
upgrade your copy of F-Secure SSH to version 1.0.2 or 2.0. More
details appear below.

More information about the F-Secure 1.0.2 and 2.0
for Macintosh upgrades
--------------------------------------------------
Why you might need to upgrade your software
-------------------------------------------
You'll need to upgrade to a newer version of F-Secure SSH for the
Macintosh to connect to newer SSH server software based on the newer
(and different) SSH2 protocol.
Specifically, if you are using version 1.0.1 or earlier of the
F-Secure SSH product for the Macintosh, you'll need to:
- Upgrade to version 1.0.2 in order to connect to SSH2 servers
(such as Socrates') which are configured (for backwards
compatibility) to allow SSH1 connections on the same port.
and/or
- Upgrade to version 2.0 in order to connect to SSH2 servers
which are configured to only allow connections via the newer
SSH2 protocol.
Here's an overview (courtesy of F-Secure and IST-CCS's Richard Peters):

About the new versions
----------------------
Version 1.0.2 of F-Secure SSH for the Macintosh is a minor upgrade to
previous 1.0.x products, which are all SSH1 clients. This version
includes a "compatibility fix for SSH2 server SSH1 emulation mode,"
according to the release notes.
Version 2.0 of this product is a completely-rewritten SSH2 client.
Three important notes about this version:
1) Its human interface is very different from the 1.0.x releases.
Some reconfiguration and relearning will be required.
2) This is an SSH2-only product; you will not be able to use it to
connect to hosts which are running only the older, SSH1 server
software.
3) A newer version, 2.1, has subsequently been released. A
time-limited demonstration copy can be downloaded from the vendor's
Web site, <URL:http://www.f-secure.com/download-purchase/>. You can
contact Software Distribution (below) for details about obtaining
that version.
You can keep both versions of this product (1.0.2 and 2.0) around
on your computer, and use whichever is appropriate to connect to an
SSH server on a particular host.
Checking whether you have older versions
----------------------------------------
You can check whether you currently have older versions (1.0.1 or
earlier) of this software by searching for applications whose names
begin with "F-Secure" on your disks.
When you open the "F-Secure SSH" application program, a splash
screen will display the product version. In addition, when this
program is running, you can view the product version by selecting
"About F-Secure SSH..." (or "About SSH2...") from the Apple menu.
Obtaining upgrades
------------------
You can obtain upgrades to version 1.0.2, 2.0, or both by sending
e-mail to IST Software Distribution at
<products@socrates.berkeley.edu>, or via the other contact methods
listed at <URL:http://softdist.berkeley.edu/Contact.html>.
You can choose to receive these upgrades either as e-mail
attachments or on diskettes. To receive diskettes -- through
prearrangement with IST Software Distribution -- you can bring two
blank 3.5" 1.4 MB diskettes for version 1.0.2 and/or one blank 3.5"
1.4 MB diskette for version 2.0 to 238 Evans Hall.
