On Monday, May 15, 2000, Apple announced a change to the release
schedule for its next generation operating system, Mac OS X.

       The new schedule is:

       May 2000
         Developer Preview 4, out now

       Late Summer 2000
         Public Beta

       January 2001
Release 1.0 available as a retail product
Will also ship pre-installed on new Macs on or shortly after this date

Previously, Apple had stated that the first retail release of Mac
OS X would take place during Summer 2000, so this new schedule
reflects a delay of approximately six months. Apple's announcement
that a public beta will be available is also new.

Apple's January 2001 target date for shipping the OS pre-installed
on new Macs has not (so far) changed, however.
