Hi Rishi,
>If and when the forwarding service becomes available, will forwarding
>for alumni messages also be offered (e.g. '@cal.berkeley.edu' becomes
>simply '@berkeley.edu')? I know this would be tremendously popular with
>technicly-inclined alumni such as myself.
Your query of December 4th to the comments address on the
Berkeley.EDU Expeditionary Force (BEEF) website, above, was forwarded
to us for response.
We appreciate your offering the suggestion that at some point, UC
Berkeley Alumni Association forwarding addresses, such as
'yourname@cal.berkeley.edu', could instead be represented as
"yourname@berkeley.edu' addresses. We will be taking this suggestion
into consideration for the new campus email system, CalMail.
Just as a note, even if this proves technically feasible, there may
be some policy issues that could potentially forestall the
implementation of this suggestion. These issue include resolving
namespace conflicts between addresses used by active campus faculty,
staff and students, and the large and growing number of Cal alumni
worldwide, as well as any institutional desire to continue to
distinguish alumni addresses from active Berkeley email addresses.
Regarding the latter, the following are a few representative
examples of addressing formats used by other higher education
institutions:
@alumni.utexas.net
@alum.dartmouth.org
@alum.mit.edu
@mba____.hbs.edu (where ____ is apparently the year that the
Harvard Business School MBA was conferred)
Aron Roberts
BERT Outreach Team
(whose alumni address is aronroberts@cal.berkeley.edu)
P.S. You have our sincere apologies for the delay in responding to
your suggestion.
