Tom,
Congratulations on a positive and straightforward tone for the start of the
report. It's a very good improvement.
Specific comments:
Namespace:
"The namespace should be coordinated with the socrates/uclink/CalNet
namespace (hereinafter, "Namespace")."
add "...... socrates/uclink/CalNet namespace project"
Last paragraph of Assignment
" ...in the realm of the CalNet friendly name"
We've finally gotten the CalNet team to use the term "self-selected"
rather than "friendly" - can this wording be reworked to focus on
the concept of "self-selection" instead of "friendliness"?
I suggest:
The lack of a satisfying scheme for auto-assignment already had the
group leaning away from the idea, when we found out that the CalNet
Steering Committee had recently grappled with the same problem, in
the realm of the CalNet self-selected name. The CalNet Steering
Committee rejected a proposal for auto-assigned CalNet names, saying
"It is more in keeping with the Berkeley culture to allow
self-selection." Several members of the committee concurred with this
sentiment, and we discarded the idea of assigning names.
Process recommendations:
Under Policy discussions: I'm not aware of any continuing discussion of
automatic assignment of email addresses to incoming students. I think that
idea has been thoroughly put to bed, so I don't see the need to continue
to argue the point around auto-assignment and think that most of that
paragraph should be deleted. If you want to make sure the arguments are
made, perhaps rather than the sentence:
Also under consideration is a scheme for automatically assigning e-mail
addresses (probably uclink accounts) to incoming students.
lead into this discussion with:
If schemes for automatically assigning e-mail addresses to incoming
students are revived, students should get the option .........
Expenses and Workload Issues:
Web Interfaces: replace "friendly" with "self-selected"
Account Management: I would hope that a web-interface would be
available for name changes, so that only exceptions would come to
UAS as a workload. Should the work of creating this interface
be added to the Web Interfaces section?
Tom, thanks for a good job of capturing all our comments and reactions.
Jacqueline
